Top 8 The Famous Pagodas in Myanmar

Each year Myanmar welcomes millions of pilgrims, images of ancient temples, magnificent, splendid, ancient legends, and many beautiful landscapes.\

1. Shwedagon - The Golden Temple

Shwedagon Pagoda is a symbol of Burma, located on Singuttara Hill in Yangon, built more than 2,500 years ago, including 1,000 small pagodas around the central tower, including 72 stone temples worshipping Buddha statues inside. This is the most sacred temple for storing  four sacred treasures: eight hairs of the Buddha, water filter of Koṇāgamana, the staff of Kakusandha, and a piece of the robe of Kassapa Buddha.

Visitors to Myanmar are impressed by the artwork because the pagoda is sparkling gold, with a 74 karat diamond on top, the main arch has a crown inscribed with 4531 diamonds. It is covered by 8,690 gold leaflets, 2,320 rubies, turquoise, on the top of the tower are 1065 gold bells and 421 silver bells. This is one of the most magnificent Buddhist temples in Myanmar, so far it has experienced many incidents but the temple still retains its ancient antiquity.

2 . Shwezigon Golden Temple

Shwezigon Golden Pagoda is a famous pagoda located in Bagan, the ancient kingdom of Pagan, home to thousands of large and small temples, built in the 12th century with magnificent splendor, the temple has become a model for manystupa tower later.

3. Kyaikto Temple (Golden Stone)

Located more than 210 km from the capital, Yangon, Kyaikhtiyo Temple is built on the giant golden stone for 2,500 years. It is 7.3 meters high and 15.2 meters in circumference. Between the stone and the surface under is just 78cm2, covered with gold leaf. Kyaikhtiyo Temple means that the temple is placed on the head of the monk. However, in this place, only men are allowed to go through the fence and touch the stone, but women are not allowed to cross the bridge, so they only can view the stone from the distance.

4. Shwemawdaw Paya Temple

Shwemawdaw Payala Temple is the tallest temple in Myanmar, about 114 meters high, builtmore than 1000 years ago. This Buddhist work is especially important for local people because it also houses many Buddhist monuments and stupas. On the way to Myanmar, from a very distant distance, the image of the pagoda is clearly visible by the reflection of yellow light on the blue sky. Not only gold plated outside, but inside the temple many statues of Buddha are also inlaid with gold plated.

5. Kuthodaw Temple

Kuthodaw Temple is located at the foot of Mount Mandalay, built under the reign of King Mindon. In particular, the temple attracts visitors by the largest collection of Buddhist scriptures in the world, 1460 pages, is made up of 1,458 stone slabs, 1.5m high and 107cm wide, stone slabs resemble small cave. And to read and understand this book, readers will have to spend 500 days with 8 hours of reading a day.

 6. Mahamuni Buddha Temple

The Mahamuni Temple, located in Mandalay, was built in the 18th century, with a Mahamuni Buddha statue at 4 meters high, weighing 6.5 tons and inlaid with a layer of gold up to 15 cm thick by the Buddhists. 

 As ancient legend says, only five statues are carved according to the portrait of the Buddha. Two statues are located in India, two are in heaven and the last one is in the Mahamuni Buddha Temple. Therefore, this place became the site of Myanmar pilgrimage where many Buddhists came to pray.

7. Shwe Oo MinTemple

The Shwe Oo Min natural cave temple is located on a limestone mountain at Pone Taloke Lake. The temple is particularly impressive with natural caves, covered with Buddha statues of all shapes, sizes and materials. The temple is currently hosting 8094 Buddha statues of great religious value.

8. Sule Pagoda

Sule temple in Yangon is one of the famous temples in Myanmar. In the 20th century, Suletemple was also the political center of the country because it is located in the heart of the city between large buildings with modern architecture. Guests will feel very interesting when the ancient building existed for more than 2,500 years is located among the vibrant atmosphere on the street today.\
